If you’re searching for a custom pool builder in Cary, NC, you’re likely not looking for a standard template or a contractor-led build. You want a partner who can translate your home’s architecture, landscape, and your lifestyle into a cohesive outdoor environment. At Jim Hinson Pools, we take a design-first approach to creating custom pools and complete backyard retreats built around the way you want to live outdoors.
Every project starts with an in-depth conversation about your vision. From clean-lined contemporary pools to timeless estate-inspired designs, we create outdoor environments that complement the property and provide lasting value. Our approach brings design and construction together so every detail works as part of the larger vision.
Tailored Backyard Experiences Designed Around the Way You Live
Some backyards are simply open space. Others become the setting for weekend gatherings, early-morning swims, family time, and evenings that stretch well past sunset. Our work is built for that second category.
As a design-build team focused on high-end residential projects, we approach every backyard as a complete experience, not just a pool in the ground. Whether you’re drawn to a modern geometric layout, a resort-inspired sun shelf, an integrated spa, or subtle water features that add movement and sound, our goal is to deliver a finished environment that feels intentional from every angle.
What you can expect from our approach:
- Modern and timeless pool designs that align with your home’s architecture
- Thoughtful planning around privacy, sightlines, and entertaining zones
- Premium finishes selected for durability and long-term appeal
- Outdoor environments designed to feel cohesive rather than pieced together
- A complete design-build process managed with careful attention to detail

Custom Pool Design in Cary, North Carolina
Great pool design starts with understanding the property. Cary’s neighborhoods range from established communities with mature landscaping and traditional homes to newer developments with modern architecture and more contemporary outdoor spaces. Each property presents a different opportunity for design.
Our custom pool design in Cary process considers the architecture of your home, available space, grading, landscaping, privacy, views, sun and shade, entertaining areas, and the materials that will bring everything together.
Rather than forcing a standard pool shape or style into your backyard, we develop the design around your property. The result is a pool that feels like a natural extension of your home rather than something simply installed in the yard.
Inground Pool Builder in Cary, NC With a Seamless Design-to-Build Process
Luxury projects require structure. Our clients value clear communication, realistic planning, and a process that respects the scale of the investment from start to finish. Most projects follow a 9â12 month design-to-build timeline, and starting early gives you the best flexibility for the following swimming season.
Consultation & Concepting
We begin with a detailed consultation focused on your lifestyle, design preferences, and practical considerations such as placement, access, privacy, and how the pool will integrate with existing or planned outdoor spaces.
Architectural Design
Once we understand your goals and property, we develop the architectural direction for your pool and surrounding outdoor environment. We consider proportions, sightlines, materials, elevations, and the relationship between the pool, home, landscaping, and entertaining areas.
Permitting & Planning in Cary
Every pool project has its own planning and permitting considerations. We account for the requirements associated with the property and coordinate the necessary planning steps so the project can move forward with clarity and organization.
Construction & Detailing
When construction begins, precision takes over. We focus on the details that shape the final experience, including structural construction, coping, tile, finishes, equipment, lighting, and surrounding outdoor elements.
Our Pool & Outdoor Living Services in Cary
A complete backyard environment often requires more than a swimming pool. We provide complementary services that allow us to bring the pool, outdoor living spaces, water features, lighting, and entertaining areas together under one cohesive design.
Commercial Aquatic Construction
Commercial aquatic projects demand a thoughtful approach from the earliest planning stages through final construction. Our team works with commercial properties to develop aquatic spaces that are practical, durable, visually appealing, and suited to the needs of the site.
Every commercial project involves its own set of considerations, from coordinating the pool or water feature with the surrounding architecture and property layout to addressing functionality, accessibility, durability, and long-term use. We carefully evaluate these elements to help create a finished aquatic environment that works seamlessly within the larger property.
With our background in aquatic construction and design, we bring the same attention to craftsmanship and detail to commercial projects that we apply to residential pools. The result is a professionally planned aquatic space built with both appearance and performance in mind.
Custom Pool Design & Consultation
Creating the right backyard starts with understanding how you envision using the space. Our team begins by listening to your ideas, preferences, and goals so we can create an outdoor environment that feels natural for your home and lifestyle.
During the planning and design process, we look at the details that make your property unique, including the home’s architecture, available space, existing landscape, privacy requirements, entertaining plans, accessibility, and your long-term vision for the backyard. These factors help us develop a pool design that complements the property instead of forcing it into a predetermined layout.
From a sleek modern pool designed for relaxing and entertaining to a practical inground pool for the whole family or an expansive resort-inspired backyard retreat, we can transform your ideas into a personalized outdoor space designed around the way you want to live.
Decking & Outdoor Living Spaces
A custom pool should connect naturally with the rest of your backyard. We design and build decking and outdoor living spaces that extend the pool environment and create comfortable areas for relaxing, dining, entertaining, and spending time with family.
We consider materials, proportions, circulation, sightlines, seating areas, landscaping, and the relationship between the pool and home. By considering these elements as part of the original design, we can create an outdoor environment that feels unified from every angle.
For Cary homeowners planning a complete backyard transformation, integrating decking and outdoor living areas with the pool can create a more functional and visually cohesive result.
Luxury Spas & Water Features
Water can do more than provide a place to swim. A thoughtfully designed spa or water feature can add another dimension to your backyard by introducing movement, sound, relaxation, and visual interest.
We incorporate luxury spas and water features into custom pool environments based on the architecture of your home and the overall goals of the project. Options can include integrated spas, cascading water elements, fountains, and other architectural features designed to complement the pool.
For homeowners who want their backyard to feel like a private resort, these details can transform a swimming pool into a complete outdoor destination. We focus on proportion and integration so every feature feels intentional.
Your outdoor environment should continue to look and function beautifully after sunset. We incorporate architectural pool lighting and electrical systems into the overall design to enhance both the appearance and usability of your pool and outdoor spaces.
Strategically planned lighting can highlight architectural details, illuminate pathways and entertaining areas, and create a welcoming atmosphere around the pool. Electrical planning also plays an important role in properly integrating pool equipment and other outdoor features.
By addressing lighting and electrical requirements during the design and construction process, we can create a more polished and cohesive finished environment.
For many Cary homeowners, the backyard is an extension of the home. An outdoor kitchen or built-in grill can make the space more functional while creating a natural setting for entertaining, dining, and gathering.
We design outdoor kitchens and built-in grills as part of the larger backyard environment. We consider the relationship between cooking areas, dining spaces, seating, decking, landscaping, and the pool so the finished space feels connected and easy to use.
Whether you want a dedicated grilling station or a more complete outdoor kitchen, we can incorporate the right elements into the broader design of your backyard.
Modern Pool Design That Fits Cary's Architecture
Cary’s neighborhoods range from established communities with classic homes and mature landscaping to newer builds with clean lines and contemporary aesthetics. That variety is exactly why thoughtful design matters. The best projects do not force a particular style onto the property. They respond to it.
Our design process considers the details that shape the final experience, including:
- How your home frames outdoor views
- Where sun and shade fall throughout the day
- How grading and landscaping affect flow and sightlines
- The balance between open lawn, hardscape, and entertaining zones
- A materials palette that feels consistent with the home’s architecture
For many clients, the pool is one part of a broader transformation. If your vision includes outdoor living upgrades, we can align the pool with complementary elements so the entire space feels unified.
